question 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

When making our trailer, poster and magazine front cover we have got to make sure there is consistency within many things such as main images, typography, narrative ECT.

The magazine and film poster were both made to create a buzz and awareness and to also advertise our film 'The Asylum'. I think that our poster and our magazine both do these things and through out the trailer, poster and magazine you will see a consistency through iconography, typography, themes and other things.

Main Images - The pictures used in the poster and the magazine and the iconography and the visual elements cover are different In both products we have used a dark photo, however the photo on the magazine cover is more reveling and allows the audience to see the antagonist's face; reasons being that on the poster we did not think the audience should see to much of the antagonist as it gives to much away. On the poster the lighting is completely dark so dark that the picture of the antagonist looks like a shadow, differently the picture on the magazine cover has more lighting but is still of a dark element. The iconography is consistent within the trailer, poster and magazine front cover. In the trailer we are shown both dark shots and shots that have a well lit shots which can be found in both the poster and magazine front cover.

Typography - What is Grace actually after? What really happened to Harriet? How far would you go to discover the truth?. These are all the questions on our magazine and poster, these are also examples of consistency with our theme on investigation. The actors name 'Hayley Gill' can also be found on poster and magazine so the audience knows the main actor in our trailer. One thing that is consistent through out all of our products is the 'The Asylum' Font. The font of our title is very important as this one of the first thing people will see, once seen this they get an idea of what genre of film it is.

Actors - The main character who is Grace the 'Antagonist' has be promoted throughout our products and it is clear that she is the antagonistic; you get this from her presence in the trailer and the images of her on the products. Her presence is consistent throughout. The lighting and effects on the main images on the poster and magazine represents horror as you associate dark and colourless pictures with horror. However the 'Protagonist' Inspector Sager is shown throughout the trailer but is not shows throughout the poster or magazine cover, this is highlights some inconsistency.

Narrative - When looking at all 3 of our products I think that the story is clear through all of our products. The typography on all 3 of products keeps consistency and makes our storyline consistent throughout. The rhetorical questions on each 3 keeps with the idea of the known and unknown and the sense of investigation.

Following levi-strauss's theory I think that our products have outlines some binary opposites:
Life/Death- The death of Harriet, what will Inspector Sager do to survive? The importance of life and death is portrayed throughout.

Trailer - The trailer creates awareness of what the film is about, also about what the audience can expect from the actors, effects and graphics. The trailer only gives a little bit away of what our film is about meaning that the audience must go to the cinema to watch it to find out the full story.

Magazine Front Cover - The magazine front cover promotes the film to the target audience especially to people who are film fanatics.

Film Poster - The first part of the marketing campaign will be the film poster, as it gives the audience little snippets of our film. The film poster will be seen in various places such as billboards, buses and phone boxes. This will create awareness of our film.

In conclusion I think that the combination of our main products and ancillary texts were effective in many ways, the main way in which it was effective is that the typography, narrative, actors and themes are consistent through out all 3 of out products.

Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of the Horror Genre?

There are many forms and conventions within a horror trailer.

Stock Characters - The stock characters are Inspector Sager who has been asked to investigate a murder at Brook House school. Another stock character is the Popular girl who is murdered, this is common in a horror film and adheres to the codes and conventions.

The Antagonist - The Antagonistic is Grace, she was a student at brook house when it was an asylum for the mentally ill. The fact that she is a women adheres to Mulveys male gaze and challenges the codes and conventions of horror.

Themes - The themes of the The Asylum are: Investigation, The Known and the unknown.

Settings and Locations - Acland Burghley School which is acting as 'Brook House School' which is is meant to be a safe place.  We chose the location to be a school because you would think that a school is a safe place for all children.

Iconography - Dark lighting through out which represents the mood and the atmosphere, Cross cutting which indicates the past and the present and also the state of horror as it intensifies.

Film Title and Typography -  The Asylum is associated with negative things. It is also supernatural which came from the idea of brook house once being a home for mentally ill children. That is where we got the name from, it once being an asylum for children. Our font was found on dafont.com and we chose is because it represented our themes well.

Dialogue - We did not have much dialogue but we used the sound and music to express the emotions, however we had a few voice overs such a new report explain the murder which had been taken place
Sound - The sound develops the codes and conventions of the horror genre as we have used quite dreary music which builds up at the end which creates fast in pace atmosphere.

magazine

Our magazine the 1st draft
Final Draft

When making a film magazine front cover it has got to do many things. It has got to promote and advertise your movie and also the casting crew and the directors. We made this magazine on Photoshop. We originally used an image taken while we were filming but the quality of the picture was not up to scratch for our magazine, so we took a new and better picture. While making the magazine front cover we done some research on other magazines and Empire is the one that jumped out on us. We used this magazine as a guide to making ours. The dark background, and the bold colors adheres to the horror genre. We decided to use the font we found from dafont.com for 'the asylum' as it gives a continuous theme through out our production.

poster

This is the official poster for the asylum. We had some audience feedback from people and we added a few changes and took away some things. We decided to use this photo because the lighting is very dark and shady and also because we cannot see too much of our  antogonist's face, it adheres to our theme of myster. investgigation and the unknown. Our font is from dafont.com,we chose this font as it looks like it has been 'scratched' out, we decided to have the common colour of red as t represents blood and horror. We have our tagline written on the top "How far would you go to discover the truth" again it adheres to our theme of unkown.
